Help In Giving Up Smoking

Have you heard the statement - "Smoking will never harm you?" Those statements come with words like "My uncle lived until he was 86 and had a great life" and "I smoke, sure I have a little wheeze and small cough from time to time, but that's nothing everyone have that?"

These words could only come from a smoker! One thing you can be assured of is that a little wheeze and a small cough can only lead to more health problems in the coming years for anyone to thinks that way. Further, what's to say his uncle might of lived to 100 should he have not have smoked.

Even tho some people don't wish to give up completely YET! But the time will come when it becomes more difficult to do things that once came easy. The wheeze will get heaver and could turn into emphysema or even worse lung cancer and that little cough sometimes just won't stop. Something to look forward to?

To give up smoking, a person must first decide that they are ready to give up and from that time on begins the arduous task begins.

How to quit smoking once and for all!

So what if it is really that easy? What if all your beliefs about how hard it is going to be to quit are completely false? What if, after just one session of hypnotherapy or NLP you find it incredibly easy to become and remain a happy, confident non-smoker for life?

The reason why hypnotherapy & NLP are so successful is because both our beliefs about smoking and our habitual smoking behaviours reside within your unconscious mind. So whilst consciously we may wish to quit, all too often our all powerful unconscious mind simply would not let us.

You see when smokers first start; they buy into years of conditioning telling them that smoking made them feel somehow better, more confident and more relaxed. And as a result of lighting up those first few cigarettes, smokers permanently install these extremely unhelpful beliefs directly into their unconscious, beliefs that also included the concept that quitting was going to be really difficult.

At the same time, smokers make a conscious decision to choose those perceived benefits of feeling better, more relaxed and more confident, over the initial physical reactions of inhaling the poisonous fumes. So as time goes on and those uncomfortable physical reactions start to subside, as a result of their newly formed nicotine addiction, they started to mistake the relief of feeding that addiction with feelings of relaxation and confidence.

So many years later, after smoking tens of thousands (possibly hundreds of thousands) of cigarettes, they have re-enforced those unhelpful beliefs about smoking and how hard it is to quit and, they have also trained their unconscious minds to wrongly associate the process of lighting and smoking a cigarette with feeling good, confident and relaxed.

Hypnotherapy and NLP allow us to retrain the unconscious mind of a smoker to disregard those false beliefs about smoking and how hard it is to quit, and to swap those unconscious benefits for something altogether more exciting and fulfilling - feeling absolutely great!

So as a result, the all too familiar withdrawal pangs of irritability, mood swings and cravings, the primary reasons why people fail to permanently quit smoking, will be replaced with feelings of relaxation, improved self confidence and overall happiness.

Remember once you stop! The easiest thing to do to relieve all the suffering is light up a smoke.

If you do! you immediately are back to square one! Keep in mind that this is going to be tough time for you. But you are stronger than you think! Take one day at a time and give up one day at a time.

In your favour you have a range of treatments - various types drugs, nicotine patches, counselling, and group therapy groups.

The question is: Which works best? It should also be noted some people are able to deicide to give up and just do it! That might be you!

For those who are moderate or heavy smokers that are making the effort to give up and struggling, should try Nicotine replacement therapy. It is very good to have the right mind set but sometimes the pangs can be strong. BUT don't give up!

Nicotine replacement therapy comes in a number of forms, chewing gum, patches, inhalers, lozenges and tablets you are able to place under the tongue.
Most are available without prescription from your chemist and sometimes you will find them in the supermarkets the cost varys from day to day.

Your doctor is the very best person to give you advice on the best therapy, a non smoking doctor would be a good person to talk to? Smokers with heart trouble now or in the past, who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding, should defiantly consult their doctors before using any therapy. For people smoking 10 or more cigarettes a day, nicotine replacement therapy helps boost the odds of quitting and relives the pangs of wanting to light up.

The choice of nicotine replacement therapy (chewing gum, patches, inhalers, lozenges and tablets) All work well, the most popular therapy are the patches, because they are simple to use and easy to stick on. Please continue to remember your goal, patches are no good unless you have the mine set to give up.

The time frame of being on the patches, an eight-week course should be enough. Note using patches or any therapy for that matter will not improve your chances of quitting. Wearing the patches, you do not smoke when you are asleep! So using them for 24 hours a day is not necessary 16 hours should be plenty and just as effective.

You can do this on your own, however the dosage can vary, so it is a good idea to get advice, your chemist or doctor can help. If you're going to use gum, heavy smokers should consider the higher dose 4mg rather than 2 mg gum. Some heavy smokers may even need to use combinations - gum plus patches!

Side effects form nicotine replacement therapy. Patches can cause skin rashes and sometimes irritation, gum, from chewing can often cause aches in the jaw or stomach issues. Inhalers can irritate the nose. Alternative drugs are available which need prescription which could be suitable for some people who are unable to tolerate the over the counter therapies.

Alternative treatments? Acupuncture seems to work for some as does hypnotherapy, however there is not enough researchers evidence to say give it a go!>

Some smokers do not like the idea of using medication to quit this is admiral if you have the will power to get you over the line to quit!

Counselling is a very effective alternative combine will power and a will to succeed however one visit to a counsellor is usually not enough. Researchers tell us your visits should be intensive and ongoing.

Individual and group programmes can definitely assist, increase and help you with achieving your plan to quit smoking.

Telephone Quit line or help lines are very effective, as they offer good advice, have a lots of information and are available for you.

It has been mentioned that will power without the use of any therapy has been used successfully by many. It is know that about 50% of the smokers who succeed in giving up smoking (quitting) manage to do so without any particular support program or treatment.

The term used is going Cold Turkey Just Stop! Complete Cessation!

For some whom want to cut back and slowly give up smoking the gradually reducing the number of cigarettes over a period of time can work. This method is easy to start but needs to have a firm commitment.

Heavy smokers wishing to cut back can start by introducing a programme such as not smoking in the car or not in the house, not before morning tea and so on. Anyone can give up for a few hours at a time. All you need do is extend that time over a period until you might not smoke at night or the week end and until one day in the future you only smoking one or two a day and enjoying each one until you're ready to stop!

Just as long as you understand this method is harder and takes will power.

A little hint DON'T TELL ANYONE YOU ARE GIVING UP! kept that to your self. Armed with the facts you have a much better chance of quitting, it should be said without any help, the chances of successfully giving up are low. BUT you can do it!
