Hotel ransomed by hackers as guests are locked out of rooms in Australia
Romantik Seehotel Jaegerwirt, a luxurious 4-star hotel in Austria paid thousands in Bitcoin ransom to cybercriminals who hacked their electronic key system.
The management admitted this was the third and worst cyber attack they had suffered and their entire key system was taken down.
Guests could no longer get into their rooms, and no new cards could be programmed. All hotel computers were shut down, including the reservation system and the cash desk system.
The hotel manager had no choice but to pay the 1,500 Euro ransom in Bitcoin, at the very opening of the ski season, to allow the 180 guests access to their rooms.
Payment made, the hackers tried their luck for the fourth time, as they had left a backdoor, but did not get anything as the computers had been replaced.
The hotel manager announced that at the next room refurbishment the electronic cards will be replaced with good old locks and real keys, like their great-grandfathers had installed 111 years ago when Seehotel Jaegerwirt was opened.
What will the future bring? Horses and carts, paper records in hospitals, and so on...
This story might add a new security question to your list when choosing and booking a hotel room...
